Tony Grogan has illustrated many books for both children and adults. His pen and ink drawings are lively and spontaneous and particularly appropriate for vignette type illustration where the drawing is incorporated into the body of the text. His drawings capture the character, tone and ambience of the text in a distinctive style and have added considerably to the quality of the books he has illustrated. Authors have commented on Tony’s sensitive and perceptive interpretation of their writing.
The unity between text and illustration in Lyn Bedford Hall’s book, Figjam and Foxtrot, illustrated by Tony and published by Struik, was recognized by the judges of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards with the premier award in its category of ‘Best Cookbook Illustrations in the World’. It’s successor ‘Return to Corriebush’ was named ‘Best Cookbook Illustrations in the English language’.
A collection of his published work and original illustrations is housed in the National English Literary Museum in Grahamstown.
He accepts commissions for approved texts.
